Why #Run That! - Top UNLV Runnin’ Rebel Songs & Videos of All-Time– NOT INCLUDING #REBS RUN or #RUN THAT

In anticipation of our premiere of #Run That and #Rebs Run 2013 on Tuesday 2/19, we have put together a list of the best UNLV Runnin’ Rebel songs and videos to date. We did not rate our own videos, but on Tuesday/Wednesday, you can decide where they rank. When we released our preview video last month, we took a lot of criticism from San Diego St. fans, some UNLV fans, and some SDSU fans posing as UNLV fans. http://sandiegostate.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1473019&PT=4&PR=2

As you will see from the below songs and video, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You have several Runnin’ Rebel generations of videos and songs. Some of those songs will hold special places in the hearts of different fans, and that is what is important. We “Run as One” and there is a place at the table for all types of Runnin’ Rebel love (See Tupac).

Mystery Rebel Song – KLUC - 1998
Tough for me to rate this one without being able to review in context. This song is probably larger than life based on my memory. Plus, if I remember correctly, it had one of the best sports calls in post-Tark Rebel history, “Dickel’s got the ball, Dickel’s got the ball, put on your dancing shoes, the Rebels are going dancing.” If it were reviewable I would probably put this just after Rebelicious. I also could be making up that this song existed… If any one has any info or a download of this song I would be forever grateful!

I Love My Rebs!

Technically not about UNLV, but this video kills me every time. It takes all my restraint not to make a parody video of this song...#instantclassic #comingsoon

The List

#13 Moves Like Moser – KLUC – 2012

This is the worst by far. See #11 for more details.

#12 Jerry, Jerry – ? - 1987

Very high on unintentional comedy scale. Mad respect for making this video, but it’s brutal. Appears to be a Tim & Eric skit gone awry. If anyone has more info on the context of this recording I would be curious to know more about this. Will consult Ron Futrell as this was way before my time :)

#11 We’re Rebels And You Know It – KLUC – 2012

Let me start by saying KLUC has put out some good stuff over the years, and it is cool they are still putting out songs for fans who appreciate them. 2012, however, was not one of their best efforts. The best thing I can say about their 2012 songs were…they were short. ‘Moves Like Moser’ will make the ears bleed. ‘We’re Rebels and You Know It’ is fun, but it screams of, "Hey we need to slap together a song this year based on a trendy song". Also of note, by the time ‘We’re Rebels And You Know It’ hit, 'Sexy and You Know' was already played out. Old ladies at pro basketball games were dancing to it at half time, the original song itself was well on its way to jumping the shark, as was KLUC with their 2012 line up. Mind boggling to me that they could have latched on to #RebsRun, and instead chose to waste time and air time on these gems. Also note, opinions are like...I am sure some people enjoyed it, just not my cup of tea.

#10 Runnin’ Rebels – KLUC - 2011

The second or third Black & Yellow parody/mix for the 2010-11 season, but hey at least it wasn’t called ‘I’m a Rebel’. Solid effort, but ranks here based on being last to the dance among other factors. Highest redeeming quality is the KLUC patented play-by-play calls mixed in with the song/video.

#9 Im A Rebel – RyZe – 2010

Language warning lol…Hitting YouTube 6 days after Tbrowns, 'I’m a Rebel'. Video is non-existent, song is decent. Would have to give the nod to Tbrown for creativity, but this song was more of a direct Black & Yellow parody/mix…and would begat the above spin off….

#8 Notorius – KLUC - 2000

Decent. One of the originals of this KLUC crew, so it ranks higher based on originality at the time versus pure quality.

#7 Rebel Be – KLUC – 2010

Another fun song. Lauren at KLUC is the highlight, as with Rebelicious. Although she may have been a little high pitched in spurts. It was a cool song, and hit at the right time, following Imma Be.

#6 I’m A Rebel – Tbrown 2010-11

One of the best straight rap tracks. Starts a little generic, but lyrics are on point after that. Could probably be higher based on song. Lower based on video. Lacks mass appeal.

#5 Running With the Rebels - LexRox – 2011

Obviously the highest production value of any of the songs on the list, both video and song wise. I could nit pick a few things, but LexRox seems like a cool chick, and I really enjoy the song. It’s fun!

#4 Rebelicious – KLUC - 2008

The best of the more recent KLUC tracks. Lauren does a great job on this one and nails it. Lyrics are on point and slight updates were made as the Rebels advanced. This song and the 2008 team had Las Vegas in a frenzy!

#3 The Fever’s Back - Big Beat Battalion – 2005

Another fun song. Came out at a time when the fan videos/songs were at a stand still.

#2 Walk Like a Tarkanian - ? – 1987-1990

One of the first songs I remember as a kid. It was cool in the late 80’s, early 90’s, and it’s still a neat song today. From what I understand this originally came out in ’87, and it obviously crushes Jerry, Jerry lol (also released in '87 best I can tell). This song was still being played locally up until our title run in 90.

#1 Runnin’ Rebel Fever – George Dare – 1983-present
The OG. The best school song…ever. Cemented with the Rebels Final Four runs and highlight packages when we won our national championship. Roll out that red carpet!!!

Special thanks and credit to all the artists cited, KLUC for archiving their songs, and youtube user rebelbandman who batched some of the songs together on his channel and made my life easier.

Did we miss anything? Let us know. I will consult my Rebel historian, Ron Futrell for any holes in the list.

Summertime Blues; Not This Year

Normally this is the time of year when Rebel basketball fans sit around waiting, wondering, and hoping that something amazing will happen and the top recruits in the nation will somehow just suddenly decide to make Vegas home and UNLV will return to its former glory.

Perhaps Tim Duncan's long lost little brother will be found and he'll show up in the Nevada desert with no way to get home and he'll just decide to stay here.

Waiting for a miracle to happen.

I'm starting to believe in miracles.

Now, I've got nothing specific on a relative of Duncan's (I'm not even sure if he has a little brother,) but with some of the recruits that have joined the program recently, I'm thinking there's been some divine intervention somewhere.

Dave Rice and his staff have made this a fun summer.

I don't want to put expectations so high that they can't be met, Dave knows the expectations of UNLV basketball better than anybody, but I will say this, he has become a Tark/Bayno hybrid of sorts.

Let me explain.

Jerry Tarkanian was never a great recruiter. He got solid players and turned them into studs. Armon Gilliam was a JuCo guy, Larry Johnson signed with SMU out of high school (SMU?), Greg Anthony went to Portland State out of Rancho High (yes, that Portland State.) Bill Bayno meanwhile brought in the great players like Shawn Marion, Keon Clark, and Tyrone Nesby, but couldn't coach or motivate these guys into consistent winners (another column for another day on that one.) Since Rice first decided to go from Rhodes Scholar Candidate to coach I always felt he would make a great one, we saw a touch of that last season, now we have seen he can also recruit great players. Whenever the top recruiting classes in the nation are mentioned, the Rebels are there. It's been a while since this program has seen this sort of national attention.

One of the things that made it fun back in the Tark days was the fact that the national conversation on college basketball would always include the Runnin' Rebels. Many times that conversation would begin and end with, "Who can beat the Rebels?" That talk is now back. "Who can out-recruit the Rebels?" Not many schools, if any, can beat what the Rebels have done during this off season.

It may take a while longer for Rice to build this program into one that captures the national attention and reunites this community, but there is no question that we are headed that direction. I do know he has helped make this spring and summer one of the most fun we have had in years. Who didn't get big smiles over the news of Anthony Bennett and Roscoe Smith? During those few weeks it was hard for me to go anywhere without somebody bringing up those names, and the others that joined the list of Rebel recruits. It will get loud, and it will get fun in 2012 for this team, this program and this city.

Nigel Williams-Goss Heads NW

Las Vegas- Local Finley standout and former UNLV commit Nigel Williams-Goss spurned Runnin’ Rebel fans today and committed to Washington. Immediate playing time and a chance to start would seem to be a factor. Williams-Goss lists his hometown as Oregon, so a potential return to the Northwest and exposure in the Pac-12 were also likely a factor.  In addition to UNLV, Williams-Goss had offers from Harvard, Oklahoma, and UCLA.

He is listed as the 57th ranked 2013 recruit by ESPN Recruiting Nation.

The Cup Runnin’-ith Over – Roscoe Smith Headed to the Rebs

Las Vegas- UConn transfer Roscoe Smith is headed to UNLV according to his father in a report first posted Friday by CBSSports.com.

As reported by several sources over the weekend, UNLV will apply for a waiver on Roscoe’s behalf that would allow him to play immediately in 2012. UConn is banned from postseason play in 2013, so it is possible the NCAA would approve the waiver. UNLV’s frontcourt is already loaded with the immediately available incoming talent of top ten recruit Anthony Bennett and former McDonald’s All-American and Pitt transfer Khem Birch (available at the end of the fall semester). UNLV will also return AP All-American Honorable Mention Mike Moser to the frontcourt.

Draft Express recently ranked Roscoe Smith as the 44th best sophomore prospect in the country.
